Modest Dresses

So many of us wish for pretty, modest dresses, right? 

 I personally love classy, retro cuts, below-knee length or mid-calf, fitted waists and pretty prints.

But with today's styles of off-shoulder, low-cut, short dresses, it's hard to find anything worth wearing. 

 Hello, internet! ;) 

I have found a few stores through the years that have nice products, some a little pricey,but I have found that dressing modest is pretty expensive in general.

Lately this site has been a little more boho or modern for my taste, but you can still find some nice ones. This is the more pricey company. 

 I actually haven't ordered anything from them, even though I've been a member for quite a while *blushes* but I never had the money. 

 I know other people who have, though, and their dresses seemed very pretty and of nice material.

 You can change the sleeve style, neckline, and length to your own taste, plus you have the choice of sending in your measurements and they will make the dress to fit your figure perfectly. 

 Swell, huh?  

I'm a little picky and some of the dresses are of too stiff material for me, but that's not a problem for some people, and they still have plenty of dresses of soft fabric. 

Slaydon & Rose:

I wish they had this dress before I ordered.... *groans* 

 Felicity got the same dress, but a different print and I really liked the waistline. 

But I ordered a different style (crosses fingers) and it hasn't arrived yet. 

 These dresses aren't as classy as I usually prefer, but they are soft and dainty, and the price isn't too bad. :) 

 They are having an Easter sale right now! Hurry!

This company is in England, but they have a USA site, so just make sure you click on the name I have up. 

 These are retro! <3 

Some of the prints are much too loud for me, but they have some nice soft colors, too, and most of the cuts stay true to us hard-core vintage lovers. 

 I prefer the Audrey style (above)

Winter Photo Shoot

The other day I realized I didn't have hardly any nice pictures of myself, and I was pretty tired of the same old Facebook profile photo. ;)
 So I decided that I should get dressed up, do my makeup (I usually do that everyday, anyways) and I dragged my sister out into the freezing, crisp air to snap a few photos.
 Please excuse the frizzy hair, for it has been VERY dry out, and I'm as dry and wrinkled as a year-old raison. lol
 It snowed just days after these photos, and it would have looked even better with fluffy white snow instead of brown leaves, but that can't be helped. ;)

What do think? Did they turn out well?

 The last one isn't edited in any way, so please don't judge. ;)

Harvest Party

Well, I finally got around to uploading my pictures. *weary sigh*
 Our group had a Harvest party last month, and we all dressed up (even the boys, for once)
and unfortunately, we ALL forgot our cameras, so the pictures you are about to see are from my cell phone, which has an awful camera.
 Apologies.
I didn't take very many, (again, apologies) but I guess I was too busy enjoying everyone's company. ;)

It was Sunday, and so after church, us girls and my brother went to my grandpa's to eat lunch and get ready.
 I did Marita's hair in pin curls, and it turned out very nice... for about three seconds.
I really need to invest in some setting lotion....
 But we won't even go there. lol ;)
So I set her hair in pin curls, Marissa's in barrel curls, then did their makeup as well.
 Emily came later and I did her hair and makeup, too.
I felt like I was working on set a movie. lol
 I finally got around to doing my own hair and makeup, but I don't think it turned out very well.
I was hot and tired, so my heart really wasn't in it anymore, and my fingers just wouldn't work.
 *sigh*
Oh, well.

When we finally were ready, we realized none of us brought cameras!
Shucks....
 So we very quickly took some pics with our cells then hurried out the door.

1960's

So I finally got around to recreating a period look on myself.
 I'd say this actually looks maybe late 1950's, early 1960's.

It is my first EVER attempt at a flick, so bear with me, please. ;)

This look is based on Elizabeth Taylor's look, so I added her beauty mark. ;)

And the finished look. What do you think? How did I do?

I felt like I belonged in 'Hogan's Heroes', (Even though the show takes place in the 1940's. They aren't accurate with the women's fashion AT ALL) and was quite pleased at how accurate it turned out! 

*great big grin*

 I hope to reenact the 1970's next, but we will have to see. :)

A New Season

Fall is around the corner, guys!
 Is anyone as excited as me?
I have always loved fall...the smell of rain on the green grass, a warm fire in the stove, pumpkins, apples and cider... ah, it doesn't get much better than that.
 It's always exciting for me whenever a new season approaches, no matter which one.
I guess I am always looking forward to the change of seasons.
 When it's nearing the end of winter, I am ready for summer, and whenever summer finally comes to a close, I wait for winter with excitement. haha
 One of my favorite things we do in the fall is our annual Fall Party or Harvest Party, whichever you prefer.
 As Christians, we do not celebrate Halloween, but we do get together to celebrate the coming season before winter sets in and we are all cooped up forever.
 I guess it's the same idea that the earlier generations had whenever they got together to celebrate the harvest before the snows came. :)
 Well, anyways, we gather together to eat delicious food, drink apple cider and other spicy drinks, and to enjoy each others company.
 Something my Grandma started when I was young was a costume party to go with our gathering.
I am a historical fashion nut, so it has always been something I enjoy, because I can put my knowledge of past clothing to use. ;)
 I thought maybe I would share some costume idea with ya'll, if you are interested. ;)

Time eras are always fun.
 1800's, 1900's, maybe even future fashion would be interesting! ;)
I have done the 1940's many times (a personal favorite era of mine), but any era can be lots of fun!
 If you wanted to dress up 30's, but don't have much for fancy dress, all you need is a skirt that comes below your knee, a blouse and sweater, and a cute little beret atop pin curls.

 The 1960's is also a easy era to do on a budget!
A tunic or shorter dress overtop leggings or tights is all you need really, because the hair and makeup is really what makes the look.
 Blue eye shadow, thick black eyeliner and ratted hair is perfect for the 60's.

Eras aren't the only theme I have done, though. ;)

 There is always your typical princess, bride, cowgirl, or Mommy.

Last year my little cousin Evelyn was a Crayon!

 It was adorable!

She wore a pink sweat outfit and taped the word 'Crayola' up her side in black tape, and wore a paper cone atop her head for the crayon's point.

 Clever, huh?

My sister was a Spanish senorita one year, and wore a long, full, tiered skirt, a ruffled white blouse tucked in, with a colorful scarf draped over her head.

 A long blingy necklace was around her neck, and some bangles on her wrist would have been even better.

 Her hair was in a tight bun, and she did her eye makeup dark to create a more Spanish look.



If you have money and wanted to go all out, there are other ideas.
 You could dress up like your ancestors would have (Swedish, Irish, German, ect...) or there is always characters from your favorite book or movie!
 Last year my brother went as Adam Cartwright from Bonanza. *smiles*
Anne Shirley, Jo March, Huckleberry Finn, Peter Pan, or Robin Hood are just a few ideas.

I was actually Maid Marion one year. :D

Then there are real people.
 George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Betsy Ross, Clara Barton, Jacky Kennedy, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn....
 So many choices!

Vintage Makeup

I haven't done a fashion post in a while, and I know some of my followers really enjoyed the last ones, so I thought I'd do a short one today. :)

Makeup looks changed a lot through the years.
In the early 1900's, makeup was used, but only the richest women used it, and it was very hush-hush.
 Painting your face was considered taboo, and no respectable woman would admit the secret to her flawless look.
 Eyebrows were plucked to a perfect but natural shape, cheeks were painted very sparingly with a small amount of rouge, and then powdered.
 Lips were tinted just slightly.

And then came the Roaring Twenties, where women wanted to break away from the polite and respectable earlier decade.

 Eyes were painted to look smoky, and lined with eye-liner to enhance the look of a wide eye.

Lips were shaped in a pouty look, cheeks pink and painted, and all in all, the look was very unnatural.

!930's the brows were plucked to near nothingness, and then drawn over again in a very thin line.

 Lips were painted in a cupid's bow, and cheeks were pale and powdered with a small amount of blush.

In the 1940's, the war brought a shortage of items, but women made the most of it.

 Lips were painted in their natural shape, always red, brows were plucked but natural looking, and cheeks were painted in an upside down triangle to enhance the cheekbones.

 Mascara was a must, but eyes remained much more clean and natural compared to the earlier two decades.







In the 1950's, the war was over, and peace returned to our land, so the women took advantage of the happy period.

Brows were thick and defined, lips painted naturally, cheeks powdered with pink blush, eyes were defined with lashes and lashes of mascara and lined with thick eyeliner.
